Note: Sorry for the “rant” below, but it needs to be said.
Alright, after attending tonight’s men’s hoops game against Central Connecticut University, and allowing myself an hour or two to calm down, I feel the need to show this image to the entire basketball nation.
Last year while watching College Basketball Gameday, they did a segment on Memphis’s free throw struggles. Digger showed that you actually can fit two basketballs in one hoop, not if you shot them, but the diameter of the hoop is double that of the basketball. The idea was that with the idea of it being such a large space, it shouldn’t be so difficult (Note: Someone took a free throw after that and missed, but still, a great concept).
So my biggest problem with this current Blue Hens team is their problems at the line. I am awful at basketball myself, but if you are on a D-I program, you better know how to make at least 80% of your free throws. The Hens lost by 6. I know that there shooting wasn’t stellar, but going 7-12 from the charity stripe is unacceptable. That’s only leaving five points out there, but there was at least one instance of a missed shot on the first attempt of an one-and-one. And that margin was much closer to two or three for a stretch until the end when they had to foul.

Again, the game was not lost on just free throws alone, but as a fan in the stands, you expect a made shot every time your players go to the line. It’s not like they’re on the road and have to deal with distractions, but CCU was and they went 15-20. The Vermont game was even worse, 10-21! It’s moments like that where I just expect teams to send us to the stripe in the last minutes of games to avoid any chance of us making a comeback.
Let me step back at least and give the team some credit. The defense is improving greatly, now that Ledsome has stepped up his game. Rebounds have increased by leaps and bounds after being out-rebounded by 16 in the first game. The shooting needs to improve before we truly get into the CAA schedule. Yet no matter what else goes on, the free throws need to improve, especially at home.
Quick Notes: 0-3 at Home, 0-2 on the Road, 2-0 at Neutral Sites… Delaware lead this game by 13 at with just under 7 minutes left in the first half… Even though he fouled out with less than a minute left, Ledsome’s 7 blocks (ties career high) were impressive and showed how strong he can be down low.
